TOGAF
The Open Group Architecture Framework
1. Overview: TOGAF, the most widely used EA standard in the world
flowchart LR
A["Static architecture design"] -- "Shift to a cyclical development process" --> B["TOGAF Framework"]
Definition: A standard framework and detailed methodology developed by The Open Group for designing Enterprise Architecture (EA).
Characteristics: (ADM cycle) Develops and manages EA in stages through a cyclical process called the Architecture Development Method (ADM). (Content framework) Provides a content framework that systematically classifies architecture deliverables and artifacts. (Reference models) Improves architecture standardization and reusability through reference models such as the TRM and III-RM.

| Phase | Name | Key Activities |
|---|---|---|
| A | Architecture Vision | Identify stakeholders, set and secure approval for the architecture scope |
| B | Business | Define current/target business processes and perform gap analysis |
| C | Info Systems | Design data and application architecture |
| D | Technology | Design infrastructure technology architecture — hardware, network, etc. |
| E-F | Implementation | Identify migration paths and build a detailed roadmap |

| Component | Description | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Content Metamodel | A model defining the relationships between architecture components | Supports consistent documentation |
| Enterprise Continuum | A virtual repository classification scheme for asset reuse | Spans Foundation to Organization-Specific |
| Capability Framework | A framework for operating and building capability within the EA organization | Manages organizational roles/responsibilities and maturity |
3. Expected Benefits and Application of Adopting TOGAF
| Category | Key Expected Benefit | Application and Practical Use |
|---|---|---|
| Systematic approach | Standardized architecture establishment | Embed a repeatable, proven EA process using the ADM |
| Interoperability | Stronger inter-system connectivity | Use standard reference models to improve integration across heterogeneous systems |
| Business alignment | Greater IT investment efficiency | Optimize the IT asset portfolio around business requirements |
